Understanding Toothache

What Causes Severe Toothache?

Severe toothache is intense, persistent dental pain that may throb, ache or feel sharp. It is one of the most common reasons patients visit our emergency clinic — and it almost always indicates an underlying problem that requires professional treatment.

The most common cause is dental decay that has progressed deep enough to irritate or infect the nerve (pulp) of the tooth. Other causes include a cracked tooth, gum disease, an abscess, or an impacted wisdom tooth pressing against neighbouring teeth.

At Dental Clinic London, we provide same-day toothache diagnosis and treatment. Our dentists will identify the exact cause with a thorough examination and digital X-rays, then explain your treatment options clearly before proceeding.

What to Do for Severe Toothache

Follow these steps while you wait for your appointment. Then call us on 020 7183 0527.

  1. 1Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in warm water).
  2. 2Use dental floss gently to remove any food trapped between teeth that may be causing pressure.
  3. 3Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed — ibuprofen (400mg) is usually most effective for dental pain.
  4. 4Do not apply aspirin directly to the gum — this can cause chemical burns to the tissue.
  5. 5Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there is swelling.
  6. 6Avoid very hot, very cold, or sweet foods and drinks that may worsen the pain.
  7. 7Do not ignore persistent pain — it usually indicates a problem that requires treatment.
  8. 8Call us immediately on 020 7183 0527 to book a same-day appointment.

Treatment Options

How We Treat Severe Toothache

The right treatment depends on the cause of your pain. Our GDC-registered dentists will diagnose the problem and relieve your pain — often in a single visit.

Emergency Examination & X-Rays

A thorough assessment including digital X-rays to identify the exact cause of your toothache — whether it is decay, infection, a crack, or another issue.

Ideal for: All cases of severe toothache

Dental Filling

If decay is the cause, removing the decayed tissue and placing a tooth-coloured composite filling can relieve pain and restore the tooth in a single visit.

Ideal for: Toothache caused by dental decay

Root Canal Treatment

When infection has reached the nerve (pulp), root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans the canals and seals the tooth. This saves the tooth and eliminates pain.

Ideal for: Severe pain from nerve infection or abscess

Dental Crown

After root canal treatment, or when a tooth is weakened, a crown protects and strengthens the remaining structure. Custom-made to match your natural teeth.

Ideal for: Teeth weakened by infection or large decay

Wisdom Tooth Assessment

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause severe pain. We assess the position with X-rays and recommend extraction if necessary.

Ideal for: Pain at the back of the mouth near wisdom teeth

Emergency Extraction

When a tooth is too severely damaged or infected to be saved, safe extraction provides immediate relief. We discuss replacement options such as implants or bridges.

Ideal for: Teeth that cannot be restored
