Types of Extraction
Extraction Options Explained
The type of extraction depends on the position, condition and root anatomy of the tooth. Your dentist will explain which approach is needed at your emergency examination.
From £250
Simple Extraction
For fully erupted teeth that are visible above the gum line. Your dentist loosens the tooth with an elevator instrument and removes it with dental forceps. Usually completed in under 20 minutes.
Ideal for: Teeth with intact roots above the gum line
From £450
Complicated Extraction
For teeth that have broken at the gum line, have curved or multiple roots, or are partially impacted. May require the tooth to be sectioned (divided into pieces) for safe removal.
Ideal for: Broken, multi-rooted or difficult teeth
From £650
Surgical Extraction
For teeth that are impacted (trapped beneath the gum or bone), severely broken below the gum line, or have complex root anatomy. May involve a small gum incision and bone removal.
Ideal for: Impacted wisdom teeth or complex cases
Step by Step
What Happens During an Emergency Extraction
Emergency Examination
Your dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays and assesses the extent of damage, decay or infection to determine if extraction is the best option.
Treatment Options Explained
All alternatives to extraction (root canal, crown, etc.) are discussed so you can make an informed decision. If extraction is the agreed plan, the procedure is explained fully.
Local Anaesthetic
The area around the tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthetic. You will feel no pain during the extraction.
Tooth Removal
Using specialised instruments, your dentist carefully loosens and removes the tooth. Surgical cases may involve a small gum incision.
Socket Management
The extraction site is cleaned and checked for any remaining fragments. Stitches may be placed if needed. Gauze is applied to control bleeding.
Aftercare & Replacement Options
You receive detailed aftercare instructions, any prescribed medications, and a discussion about tooth replacement options (implant, bridge or denture).
