Understanding Root Canal Treatment
When Is an Emergency Root Canal Needed?
Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected or severely damaged. Prompt treatment relieves pain and prevents the infection spreading to surrounding tissues.
Severe Toothache
Persistent, throbbing pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter painkillers, often worse at night or when lying down.
Dental Abscess
A collection of pus caused by bacterial infection at the root tip, causing swelling, tenderness and sometimes fever.
Deep Decay
When a cavity has penetrated through the enamel and dentine into the pulp chamber, bacteria can infect the nerve.
Cracked or Fractured Tooth
A crack extending into the nerve chamber allows bacteria to enter and infect the pulp tissue.
Trauma or Injury
A blow to the face or mouth can damage the nerve even if the tooth appears intact from the outside.
Failed Previous Treatment
A previously root canal-treated tooth may become reinfected if the original seal breaks down or new decay develops.
Step by Step
The Root Canal Process
What happens during your emergency root canal appointment — from assessment to full restoration.
Emergency Examination
Your dentist assesses the tooth, takes X-rays and performs vitality tests to determine the extent of infection or damage.
Local Anaesthetic
The tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthetic so you feel no pain during the procedure.
Access & Cleaning
A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth. Specialised instruments remove the infected nerve tissue and clean the root canals.
Shaping & Disinfection
The canals are carefully shaped and irrigated with antibacterial solutions to eliminate bacteria.
Filling & Sealing
The canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed to prevent reinfection.
Crown Restoration
A temporary or permanent crown is placed to restore the tooth's strength, shape and appearance. A permanent crown is usually fitted at a follow-up appointment.
