Understanding the Emergency

Oral Bleeding & Facial Swelling

Oral bleeding and facial swelling can have many causes — from post-extraction complications and dental trauma to infections and gum disease. While minor bleeding or swelling may resolve on its own, significant or persistent symptoms require prompt dental attention.

Facial swelling is particularly concerning as it can indicate a spreading dental infection (abscess) that may require urgent drainage. Uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction can be distressing, but is usually manageable with proper treatment.

At Dental Clinic London, our emergency dentists are experienced in managing all causes of oral bleeding and swelling. We provide same-day treatment to stop bleeding, reduce swelling and address the underlying cause.

When to Seek Urgent Treatment

Heavy, continuous bleeding

Bleeding that doesn't stop after 15–20 minutes of firm pressure

Significant facial swelling

Swelling in the jaw, cheek or under the chin

Bleeding after extraction

Excessive post-operative bleeding soaking through gauze

Spontaneous gum bleeding

Gums bleeding heavily without provocation

Trauma to mouth or face

Cuts, lacerations or tooth displacement from injury

Fever with swelling

Indicates possible infection requiring urgent treatment

⚠ If you have difficulty breathing, uncontrollable bleeding, or severe facial swelling restricting your airway, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Immediate Steps

How to Manage Bleeding at Home

Follow these steps while you arrange an emergency appointment. Call us on 020 7183 0527.

  1. 1Stay calm — most oral bleeding can be controlled with simple first aid.
  2. 2Apply firm pressure to the bleeding site using a clean gauze pad or damp tea bag for at least 15–20 minutes.
  3. 3If bleeding is from an extraction site, bite down firmly on the gauze and avoid speaking.
  4. 4Do not rinse, spit, or use straws — this can dislodge blood clots and restart bleeding.
  5. 5Sit upright rather than lying down to reduce blood pressure in the area.
  6. 6Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling and slow bleeding.
  7. 7Avoid hot food or drink, alcohol and smoking — these can worsen bleeding.
  8. 8If bleeding doesn't stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure, call us immediately on 020 7183 0527.

Treatment Options

How We Treat Bleeding & Swelling

Treatment depends on the cause. Our GDC-registered dentists will diagnose the problem, stop any active bleeding and treat the underlying condition.

Haemostasis & Wound Management

For active bleeding, your dentist will identify the source, clean the area and apply appropriate haemostatic agents or sutures to stop the bleeding. This is the most immediate form of treatment.

Ideal for: Active oral bleeding from any cause

Abscess Drainage

If swelling is caused by a dental infection, the abscess is incised and drained to relieve pressure and pain. The area is cleaned with antiseptic solution. Antibiotics may be prescribed alongside.

Ideal for: Swelling caused by dental infection

Emergency Extraction

If bleeding or swelling is caused by a severely damaged, infected or impacted tooth, extraction removes the source of the problem and allows healing. Aftercare instructions prevent post-operative bleeding.

Ideal for: Teeth that cannot be saved

Deep Cleaning (Debridement)

For bleeding caused by gum disease, thorough cleaning below the gum line removes the bacteria and tarite that cause inflammation. This treats the underlying condition and reduces bleeding over time.

Ideal for: Gum disease-related bleeding

Root Canal Treatment

If the source of infection or swelling is from inside the tooth, root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans the canals and seals the tooth — preserving it while eliminating the infection.

Ideal for: Internal tooth infection causing swelling

Antibiotics & Medication

Prescribed alongside dental treatment when infection is present or spreading. May include anti-inflammatory medication for swelling. Antibiotics alone are not a cure — the source must be treated.

Ideal for: Infection with systemic symptoms
