Understanding the Problem

Why Fillings and Crowns Come Loose

Fillings and crowns are designed to last for many years, but they are not permanent. Over time, the dental cement can weaken, new decay can form underneath, or the restoration itself may crack from everyday wear and pressure.

When a filling or crown falls out, the underlying tooth is left exposed and vulnerable. Without its protective cover, the tooth can be sensitive to temperature and pressure, and bacteria can enter the exposed area, increasing the risk of further decay or infection.

At Dental Clinic London, we offer same-day emergency appointments for lost fillings and crowns. In many cases, we can re-cement the original crown or place a new filling in a single visit — restoring protection and comfort quickly.

Common Reasons

Decay under the restoration

New decay can form around the edges, weakening the seal

Weakened dental cement

Cement naturally breaks down over years of chewing forces

Biting on hard foods

Ice, hard sweets, popcorn kernels can dislodge restorations

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Habitual clenching places excessive force on crowns and fillings

Ageing restorations

Old amalgam fillings and crowns have a finite lifespan

Trauma or impact

An accidental knock or blow to the face

Immediate Steps

What to Do If Your Filling or Crown Falls Out

Follow these steps, then call us on 020 7183 0527.

  1. 1If the crown is intact, try placing it back over the tooth using dental cement or denture adhesive as a temporary fix.
  2. 2If you cannot reattach the crown, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment.
  3. 3Do not use superglue — it can damage the tooth and prevent proper re-cementation.
  4. 4If a filling has fallen out, you can cover the cavity with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
  5. 5Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the exposed area clean.
  6. 6Avoid chewing on the affected side — the exposed tooth may be sensitive.
  7. 7Use over-the-counter pain relief (e.g. ibuprofen) if needed for sensitivity.
  8. 8Call us on 020 7183 0527 to book an appointment — ideally within 24–48 hours.

Treatment Options

How We Repair Lost Fillings & Crowns

Our GDC-registered dentists will assess the tooth and recommend the best option — many treatments can be completed in a single visit.

Re-cement Crown or Bridge

If the crown or bridge is intact and the underlying tooth is healthy, we can clean and re-cement it back in place in a single appointment. This is the quickest and most cost-effective solution.

Ideal for: Intact crown with healthy tooth underneath

Replacement Filling

If a filling has fallen out, we remove any decay and place a new tooth-coloured composite filling. Composite fillings are strong, durable and matched to your natural tooth colour.

Ideal for: Lost or damaged fillings

Temporary Filling

A temporary filling seals and protects the tooth while a more permanent restoration is planned. This provides immediate protection against bacteria and sensitivity.

Ideal for: Immediate protection before permanent treatment

New Dental Crown

If the original crown is damaged or the tooth requires additional treatment, a new custom-made crown restores the tooth's strength, shape and appearance.

Ideal for: Damaged crowns or teeth with new decay

Inlay or Onlay

For larger areas of decay or damage, a custom-made inlay or onlay provides a precise, durable restoration that preserves more natural tooth structure than a crown.

Ideal for: Large restorations where a filling is insufficient

Root Canal Treatment

If the exposed tooth has become infected or the nerve is damaged, root canal treatment removes the infection and saves the tooth. A crown is usually placed afterwards.

Ideal for: Infected or painful teeth after filling/crown loss
