Time-Critical Emergency

Every Minute Counts

A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. The tooth's ligament cells begin to die within minutes of leaving the socket, so the sooner the tooth is reimplanted, the better the chance of saving it.

This is most common in children and young adults during sports, playground accidents or falls. It can also happen to adults in contact sports, cycling accidents or any impact to the face.

At Dental Clinic London, we prioritise knocked-out tooth cases. Call us immediately and we will guide you through the steps to protect your tooth while you travel to our clinic. We are open 7 days a week at South Kensington.

Critical Steps

What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

Follow these steps immediately — then call us on 020 7183 0527.

  1. 1Find the tooth immediately. Pick it up by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root.
  2. 2If the tooth is dirty, rinse it very gently with milk or saline. Do not scrub it or use water.
  3. 3Try to place the tooth back into the socket. Push it in gently with your fingers and bite down on a clean cloth.
  4. 4If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a cup of cold milk or hold it inside your cheek (against the gum).
  5. 5Do not let the tooth dry out — keep it moist at all times.
  6. 6Do not wrap the tooth in tissue or cotton wool.
  7. 7Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze if there is bleeding from the socket.
  8. 8Call us immediately on 020 7183 0527 — time is critical. Aim to reach us within 30 minutes.

Treatment Options

How We Treat Knocked-Out Teeth

The treatment depends on the condition of the tooth and how quickly you reach us. Our GDC-registered dentists will assess the situation and recommend the best option.

Emergency Reimplantation

If you reach us quickly with the tooth in good condition, we can reimplant it into the socket and splint it to the neighbouring teeth while it heals. Success rates are highest within 30 minutes.

Ideal for: Teeth brought in within 30–60 minutes

Tooth Splinting

A flexible splint is bonded to the reimplanted tooth and adjacent teeth to hold it stable while the ligaments heal. This is typically left in place for 2–4 weeks.

Ideal for: After successful reimplantation

Root Canal Treatment

Most reimplanted teeth require root canal treatment within 1–2 weeks to remove the damaged nerve and prevent infection. This is a routine procedure that saves the tooth long-term.

Ideal for: Reimplanted permanent teeth

Dental Implant

If the tooth cannot be saved, a dental implant is the gold-standard replacement. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone and topped with a custom-made crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

Ideal for: When the original tooth cannot be saved

Dental Bridge

A bridge uses the adjacent teeth to support a replacement tooth. This is a fixed, non-removable solution that restores your smile without surgery.

Ideal for: Alternative to implants for tooth replacement

Maryland Bridge

A minimally invasive bridge that bonds to the back of the adjacent teeth with metal or ceramic wings. No drilling of neighbouring teeth is required.

Ideal for: Conservative replacement for front teeth
