Understanding Broken Teeth

What Is a Broken or Chipped Tooth?

A broken or chipped tooth occurs when part of the tooth's enamel or structure is damaged — whether from biting down on something hard, a sports injury, a fall, or weakening from untreated decay. It is one of the most common dental emergencies we see at our London clinics.

Broken teeth range from minor cosmetic chips to severe fractures that expose the nerve. Even a small chip should be assessed promptly, as the exposed enamel edge can cut soft tissue and allow bacteria to reach the inner tooth structure.

At Dental Clinic London, we offer same-day broken tooth repair using advanced composite bonding techniques. Most chips can be repaired in a single visit without drilling or anaesthetic — restoring the tooth's natural appearance within the hour.

Common Causes

Biting hard foods

Ice, popcorn kernels, boiled sweets, olive stones

Sports injuries

Contact sports, cycling accidents, falls

Accidents & trauma

Falls, impacts to the face, car accidents

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Habitual clenching weakens enamel over time

Large existing fillings

Old or large fillings can weaken the surrounding tooth

Untreated decay

Cavities weaken tooth structure, making it prone to fracture

Immediate Steps

What to Do If You Break a Tooth

Follow these steps while you arrange your emergency appointment. Then call us on 020 7183 0527.

  1. 1Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area.
  2. 2If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze for 10 minutes.
  3. 3Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  4. 4Save any broken tooth fragments — place them in milk or saline and bring them to your appointment.
  5. 5If there is a sharp edge, cover it with sugar-free gum or dental wax to protect your tongue and cheek.
  6. 6Avoid chewing on the affected side and do not eat hard or crunchy foods.
  7. 7Take over-the-counter pain relief (e.g. ibuprofen) if needed.
  8. 8Call us immediately on 020 7183 0527 to book a same-day appointment.

Treatment Options

How We Repair Broken Teeth

The right treatment depends on the severity of the break. Our GDC-registered dentists will assess your tooth and recommend the best option — often completed in a single visit.

Composite Bonding

The most common same-day repair for chipped or broken teeth. Tooth-coloured composite resin is sculpted onto the tooth to restore its natural shape, colour and strength. No drilling required for most chips.

Ideal for: Minor to moderate chips and fractures

Porcelain or Composite Veneers

A thin shell placed over the front surface of the tooth, ideal when a chip has affected the appearance of a front tooth or when bonding alone may not provide sufficient coverage.

Ideal for: Larger chips on front teeth or cosmetic concerns

Dental Crown

A custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth. Recommended when a large section of the tooth has broken away and a filling or bonding would not be strong enough.

Ideal for: Severe breaks or weakened teeth

Root Canal Treatment

If the break has exposed the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, root canal treatment removes the damaged tissue to relieve pain and save the tooth. A crown is usually placed afterwards.

Ideal for: Breaks that expose the nerve with severe pain

Temporary Filling or Splint

A temporary solution to protect the tooth and relieve sensitivity while a permanent restoration is planned. Temporary fillings seal the tooth and prevent bacteria from entering.

Ideal for: Immediate protection before definitive treatment

Emergency Extraction

When a tooth is too severely broken to be saved — for example, a vertical root fracture — safe extraction may be the best option. We discuss replacement options such as implants or bridges.

Ideal for: Teeth that cannot be restored
