Professional Cleaning
Why See a Dental Hygienist?
No matter how well you brush and floss, there are areas of your mouth that home care simply cannot reach. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) — a hard, mineralised deposit that bonds to the tooth surface and can only be removed with professional instruments.
Left untreated, tartar build-up leads to gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), which causes red, swollen, bleeding gums and eventually tooth loss. Gum disease is also linked to serious systemic health conditions including heart disease, stroke and diabetes complications.
A regular appointment with our dental hygienist is the most effective way to prevent gum disease, remove stubborn stains and keep your mouth healthy. At Dental Clinic London, we offer standard scale & polish (£89) and advanced Airflow therapy (£142). New patients can book their first hygiene visit for just £49.
The Benefits
Why Professional Cleaning Matters
Prevent Gum Disease
Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar (calculus) that brushing and flossing cannot reach — especially below the gum line and between teeth. Regular hygiene visits are the single most effective way to prevent gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Fresher Breath
Persistent bad breath (halitosis) is often caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar, especially in hard-to-reach areas. A professional clean eliminates these bacterial deposits, leaving your mouth feeling — and smelling — genuinely fresh.
Remove Stubborn Stains
Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco cause surface staining that regular brushing cannot remove. Our hygienist uses ultrasonic scaling and, where needed, Airflow therapy to gently blast away stains and restore your teeth's natural brightness.
Protect Your Overall Health
Research consistently links poor oral hygiene to serious systemic conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications and respiratory infections. Keeping your gums healthy with regular hygiene visits protects far more than just your teeth.
Early Detection
During every hygiene appointment, your hygienist checks for early signs of gum disease, recession, oral cancer and other concerns. Early detection means simpler, less invasive and less costly treatment — catching problems before they become serious.
Personalised Oral Health Coaching
Your hygienist provides tailored advice on brushing technique, interdental cleaning, diet and product recommendations specific to your mouth. This empowers you to maintain optimal oral health between appointments.

What Happens During a Hygiene Visit
Assessment & Discussion
Your hygienist reviews your dental and medical history, examines your gums and teeth, and discusses any concerns — sensitivity, bleeding gums, staining or bad breath. We use a periodontal probe to measure gum pocket depths around each tooth, establishing a baseline for your gum health.
Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibrations and a fine water spray to break up and remove tartar (calculus) deposits from above and below the gum line. This is far more efficient and comfortable than hand scaling alone, and reaches areas that manual instruments cannot.
Hand Scaling & Root Planing
For any remaining deposits, particularly in deeper gum pockets, your hygienist uses precision hand instruments (curettes) to thoroughly clean the tooth surfaces and root surfaces. This smooths the roots and helps the gums reattach firmly to the teeth.
Airflow (If Selected)
For patients who choose the Airflow upgrade (£142), we use the Airflow system — a fine jet of warm water, air and erythritol powder that gently removes biofilm, soft plaque and surface stains from every surface of every tooth, including deep into gum pockets and around orthodontic brackets.
Polishing
Your teeth are polished using a professional-grade polishing paste to remove any remaining surface staining and leave the tooth surfaces smooth. Smooth surfaces resist plaque build-up, keeping your teeth cleaner for longer between visits.
Aftercare & Recommendations
Your hygienist demonstrates the best brushing and interdental cleaning technique for your specific needs, recommends products (toothbrush, interdental brushes, floss, mouthwash) and advises on how often you should return. Most patients benefit from hygiene visits every 3–6 months.
