Teeth that have become loose in the socket but have not moved from their position. May need splinting and monitoring.
Urgent — within hours

Teeth that have been pushed inward, outward, sideways or partially out of the socket. Repositioning and splinting is usually needed.

Knocked-Out Teeth (Avulsion)
A tooth completely knocked out of the socket. Reimplantation is possible if treated within 30–60 minutes. Store the tooth in milk.

Root Fractures
Fractures within the root of the tooth, often invisible to the eye. Diagnosed with X-rays and may require splinting, root canal or extraction.
Same-day
Soft Tissue Injuries
Lacerations, cuts or bruising to the lips, tongue, gums or cheeks from the trauma. May require cleaning, suturing and monitoring.
Important: If you have sustained significant facial injuries, a fractured jaw, difficulty breathing, uncontrollable bleeding or loss of consciousness, attend A&E immediately. Call us once you have been medically assessed.
Step by Step
How We Manage Dental Trauma
Immediate Assessment
Your dentist performs a thorough clinical examination, takes X-rays and assesses all injuries to teeth, bone and soft tissues. The type and severity of each injury is classified.
Pain & Bleeding Control
Local anaesthetic is administered if needed. Active bleeding is controlled with pressure and haemostatic measures.
Tooth Repositioning
Displaced teeth are gently guided back into their correct position in the socket under local anaesthetic.
Splinting
A flexible splint (thin wire bonded to adjacent teeth) stabilises loosened, displaced or reimplanted teeth, allowing the periodontal ligament to heal. Typically worn for 2–4 weeks.
Repair & Restoration
Chipped or fractured teeth are repaired with composite bonding. Severely damaged teeth may need root canal treatment and a crown.
Follow-Up & Monitoring
Follow-up appointments are scheduled to check healing, take repeat X-rays and monitor for complications such as nerve damage, root resorption or infection.
