Signs of a Dental Abscess

Do You Have These Symptoms?

A dental abscess requires urgent professional treatment. If you recognise any of these symptoms, call us for a same-day emergency appointment.

Severe, Throbbing Pain

Intense, persistent pain in the affected area that may radiate to the jaw, ear or neck. Often worse at night.

Swelling

Visible swelling of the face, cheek or gum near the affected tooth. May be warm and tender to touch.

Fever & Malaise

A raised temperature, feeling generally unwell, fatigue and sometimes chills — signs the body is fighting infection.

Sensitivity to Temperature

Sharp pain when consuming hot or cold food and drinks. The tooth may also be painful to bite on.

Bad Taste in the Mouth

A foul or salty taste if the abscess ruptures spontaneously and pus drains into the mouth.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

Tender, swollen glands under the jaw or in the neck on the side of the affected tooth.

Important: If you have significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever or feel seriously unwell, attend your nearest A&E immediately. These may indicate a spreading infection that requires hospital treatment.

Step by Step

The Abscess Drainage Process

1

Emergency Assessment

Your dentist takes X-rays, examines the area of swelling, and identifies the source of infection — whether from the tooth root, gum or surrounding bone.

2

Pain Management

Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the affected area. Additional pain relief is provided if needed.

3

Incision & Drainage

A small incision is made in the swollen tissue to release the trapped pus. The area is thoroughly cleaned and irrigated with antiseptic solution.

4

Addressing the Source

Your dentist identifies the underlying cause — deep decay, a cracked tooth or advanced gum disease — and discusses whether root canal treatment or extraction is the best next step.

5

Medication

Antibiotics are prescribed if the infection has spread. Analgesics and detailed aftercare instructions are provided.

6

Follow-Up Plan

A follow-up appointment is scheduled to check healing and perform definitive treatment (root canal or extraction) to prevent the abscess from recurring.
