Premium Partial Denture

What Is a Cobalt-Chrome Denture?

A cobalt-chrome denture is a premium partial denture built on a precision-cast cobalt-chromium alloy framework. Unlike a standard acrylic denture — which is made entirely from plastic — a cobalt-chrome denture has a thin, rigid metal skeleton that sits close to your gums and palate, with acrylic teeth and gum-coloured base material attached to it.

The result is a denture that is dramatically thinner, lighter and more comfortable than acrylic. It covers less of the roof of your mouth (for upper dentures), gives your tongue more room, and allows you to feel temperature through the denture — something completely lost with thick acrylic.

Cobalt-chrome dentures cost £1,395 at Dental Clinic London — a fixed price regardless of how many teeth are being replaced. They are the best partial denture option for long-term comfort, durability and oral health.

Why Cobalt-Chrome

Benefits of Cobalt-Chrome Dentures

Thinner & Lighter

The cobalt-chromium alloy framework is much thinner than acrylic — typically less than 0.5 mm. This means less bulk in your mouth, more room for your tongue and a far more comfortable wearing experience, especially for upper dentures.

Stronger & More Durable

Cobalt-chrome is significantly stronger than acrylic. The metal framework is virtually unbreakable under normal use and resists the cracks and fractures that can occur with all-acrylic dentures. Expect 8–12 years of reliable service.

Better Fit & Stability

The rigid metal framework distributes biting forces more evenly across the supporting teeth and gums. This provides a more secure, stable fit with less movement during eating and speaking compared to a flexible acrylic base.

Healthier for Your Gums

Because cobalt-chrome dentures cover less gum tissue and allow better air circulation, they promote healthier gums. The metal framework also conducts temperature, so you can feel hot and cold through the denture — a sensation lost with thick acrylic.

Precision Clasps

Cobalt-chrome clasps are cast as part of the framework, making them more precise and retentive than the wire clasps used on acrylic dentures. They grip the teeth firmly but gently, and can be designed to minimise visibility.

Long-Term Investment

Although the initial cost is higher than acrylic (£1,395 vs from £795), cobalt-chrome dentures last significantly longer and require fewer repairs and adjustments. Over their lifetime, the cost per year is often lower.

Your Journey

How Cobalt-Chrome Dentures Are Made

1

Consultation & Assessment

Your dentist examines your remaining teeth, gums and bite to determine if a cobalt-chrome denture is the best option for you. We explain how it compares to acrylic and Valplast alternatives, and discuss the design — which teeth will be clasped, how the framework will sit and what it will feel like.

2

Primary Impressions

Initial impressions of your upper and lower jaws are taken to create study models of your mouth. These are used by the dental laboratory to design and plan the cobalt-chrome framework.

3

Secondary Impressions & Framework Design

More precise secondary impressions are taken using custom-made impression trays for an exact fit. The dental technician uses these to design the metal framework, including the clasps, rests and connectors — all cast as a single precision unit.

4

Metal Framework Try-In

The cast cobalt-chrome framework is tried in your mouth to check the fit, comfort and stability before the teeth are added. This is a critical step unique to cobalt-chrome dentures — it ensures the metal framework fits perfectly on the teeth and gums.

5

Wax Try-In with Teeth

The replacement teeth are set in wax on the metal framework so you can see and feel the finished design. Tooth position, shade, bite and aesthetics are checked and adjusted as needed before the final denture is completed.

6

Final Fitting & Aftercare

Your completed cobalt-chrome denture is fitted. Your dentist checks the fit, comfort and bite, making any fine adjustments. You receive full aftercare instructions. A follow-up appointment is booked to ensure you are adapting well.
