If you are looking for a discreet way to straighten your teeth, you have probably come across two popular options: clear aligners and ceramic braces. Both are designed to be less visible than traditional metal braces — but they work in very different ways.

Clear aligners (such as our Pro Aligners system) are removable transparent trays that gradually shift your teeth into alignment. Ceramic braces are fixed appliances that use tooth-coloured brackets bonded to the teeth with a thin wire threaded through them. Each has distinct advantages depending on your orthodontic needs.

The right choice depends on the complexity of your case, your lifestyle preferences and your clinical goals. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option following a thorough assessment. Below, we compare both so you can arrive at your consultation well informed.

Treatment Overview

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable transparent trays that gradually straighten your teeth without visible brackets or wires. Each aligner is manufactured from a precision 3D digital scan of your teeth and worn for 1–2 weeks before progressing to the next in the series. You wear your aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking and brushing.

At Dental Clinic London, we use our own Pro Aligners system — a dentist-led, in-clinic clear aligner treatment. We offer three plans to suit different levels of complexity:

  • Easy Align — from £1,000* (up to 4 months, mild adjustments)
  • Smart Align — from £2,000* (up to 17 months, complex corrections, free retainers)
  • Ultimate Align — from £2,990* (up to 20+ months, comprehensive realignment, free retainers)

All plans include a free consultation, 3D scan, all aligners, unlimited refinements and home teeth whitening gels. 0% finance is available, subject to status.

Clear Aligners May Be Suitable If You

  • Have crowding, spacing, bite issues or orthodontic relapse
  • Want a virtually invisible orthodontic option
  • Prefer to remove your appliance for eating and brushing
  • Want to see a digital preview of your results before starting
  • Are looking for a comfortable alternative to brackets and wires
  • Want flexible treatment — from 4 months for mild cases

Treatment Overview

What Are Ceramic Braces?

Ceramic braces work on the same principle as traditional metal braces — brackets are bonded to the front of your teeth and connected by a thin archwire that applies controlled force to move your teeth into alignment. The key difference is that ceramic brackets are made from translucent or tooth-coloured materials, making them significantly less visible than metal.

Ceramic braces are a fixed appliance — they remain bonded to your teeth for the entire treatment duration and are adjusted by your orthodontist at regular appointments. They are effective for a wide range of cases, including more complex bite corrections that may be challenging for aligners.

Treatment with ceramic braces typically takes 12–24 months depending on the complexity of the case. They are a popular choice for patients who want a less visible fixed option and are willing to accept the maintenance requirements that come with brackets and wires.

Ceramic Braces May Be Suitable If You

  • Have a complex bite issue that requires fixed appliance treatment
  • Prefer not to worry about removing and reinserting aligners
  • Want a less visible alternative to metal braces
  • Need continuous orthodontic force without compliance requirements
  • Have been advised that aligners are not suitable for your case
  • Are comfortable with dietary restrictions during treatment

Understanding the Difference

Key Differences Explained

1

Visibility and Appearance

Clear aligners are virtually invisible — made from transparent medical-grade plastic that fits snugly over your teeth. Ceramic braces use tooth-coloured brackets that are less noticeable than metal but remain visible on close inspection. The archwire connecting ceramic brackets is also visible, though tooth-coloured wires are available. For maximum discretion, clear aligners are the superior choice.

2

Removability

This is the most significant practical difference. Clear aligners are fully removable — you take them out to eat, drink and clean your teeth. Ceramic braces are bonded to your teeth and remain in place throughout treatment. Removability means no dietary restrictions and easier oral hygiene with aligners, but it does require discipline to wear them 22 hours per day.

3

Comfort and Adjustment

Clear aligners are generally more comfortable than ceramic braces. The smooth plastic does not irritate the cheeks or gums. New aligners may cause mild tightness for 1–2 days. Ceramic braces can cause friction against the soft tissues, and periodic wire tightening appointments often result in temporary soreness.

4

Treatment Time

For mild cases, clear aligners can be significantly faster — our Pro Aligners Easy Align plan achieves results in as little as 4 months. For moderate to complex cases, both options take a comparable amount of time (6–24 months). Ceramic braces may be faster for certain severe bite corrections that require continuous fixed force.

5

Cost

Clear aligners at Dental Clinic London start from £1,000* (Easy Align). Our Smart Align plan is from £2,000* and Ultimate Align from £2,990*. Ceramic braces in the UK typically cost between £2,000 and £4,500. For mild to moderate cases, clear aligners can be the more affordable option. 0% finance is available on our Pro Aligners plans, subject to status.

6

Suitability Based on Case Complexity

Clear aligners can treat the majority of common orthodontic conditions — crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, rotated teeth and overjet. Ceramic braces can additionally treat more severe skeletal and bite irregularities. Your dentist will assess your suitability and recommend the most appropriate option following a clinical examination.

Making Your Decision

Which Option Is Best for You?

The most appropriate option depends on your individual clinical situation and lifestyle. Here is a general guide — your dentist will confirm the best approach following examination.

Best for Discreet Appearance

Clear Aligners · From £1,000*

If discretion is your top priority, clear aligners are virtually invisible when worn. Most people will not notice you are having orthodontic treatment. Ceramic braces are more discreet than metal braces but still have visible brackets and wires. For professionals, social situations and everyday life, clear aligners offer the most inconspicuous option.

Best for Complex Cases

Ceramic Braces · £2,000–£4,500

For severe bite corrections or complex tooth movements that require continuous fixed force, ceramic braces may be the more appropriate choice. However, modern clear aligner technology — including our Pro Aligners Ultimate Align plan — can treat the majority of orthodontic conditions. Your dentist will assess whether aligners are suitable for your specific case.

Best for Comfort and Flexibility

Clear Aligners · From £1,000*

Clear aligners are removable — eat whatever you like, brush and floss normally, and remove them for special occasions. The smooth plastic is more comfortable than brackets and wires. If lifestyle flexibility and comfort are important to you, clear aligners are the better choice.

Best for Affordability

Clear Aligners · From £1,000*

Our Pro Aligners Easy Align plan starts from just £1,000* for mild cases — often more affordable than ceramic braces (typically £2,000–£4,500). Our Smart Align (from £2,000*) and Ultimate Align (from £2,990*) plans also compare favourably. All plans include a free consultation, 3D scan, unlimited refinements, whitening gels and 0% finance is available.

Clear aligners can also complement a wider smile makeover, cosmetic dentistry or general dentistry plan — your dentist at Dental Clinic London will explain all available options during your consultation.
